Manga competitions are popular in Japan. It's one of the best ways for new
creators to break into the industry. In 2003, TOKYOPOP, the leading North American
publisher of English translated manga, decided to hold such a contest for aspiring
manga-ka in the western world. The Rising Stars of Manga contest is held two
times a year, with the top ten entries being collected in The Rising Stars of
Manga graphic novel. The first two volumes are already on shelves. The third
is coming in July 2004, and the fourth contest is getting ready to begin. (Check
out TOKYOPOP's website
after June 1, 2004 for contest details.)
comicreaders.com is always interested in putting the spotlight on new, emerging
talent, and we could think of no better place to start in regards to manga than
the Rising Stars of Manga contest. Each entry is judged on its artistic merit,
story content and appeal. The judges, who are primarily members of TOKYOPOP's
editorial staff, review each submission and choose the ten best. With the help
of TOKYOPOP, comicreaders.com was able to contact some of this year's winners
to learn more about their winning submission and themselves.
